Welcome to Endorphasmic, where we talk about all things. Endorphasm. I am your hostess, erica Porter. I talk about this so much and I talk about it because I'm constantly having this conversation with people. It's the power of controlling the controllables. And in life, there's one timeless principle that empowers us to achieve resilience, excellence and, I believe, peace of mind, and that is controlling the controllables. This mindset means focusing your energy on what you can change and influence, while letting go of what you cannot, and by doing so you regain control over your life. You cannot, and by doing so you regain control over your life, feel more grounded and take command of your future. So let's just explore how this powerful philosophy applies across different areas. So sports and performance In sportses thrive when they focus on controllables like their own effort, attitude and strategy, instead of external factors like weather, crowd, noise or the actions of their opponents. Embracing this mindset builds mental resilience and helps athletes perform at their peak, unaffected by the uncontrollable distractions that often unsettle others, and the same principle applies to any performance under pressure. Directing attention to what you can influence brings clarity and it brings focus.
Speaker 1:And in our everyday life, in daily life, controlling the controllables involves owning your reactions, owning your choices and your intentions. It means deciding how you spend your time, managing your energy and building meaningful relationships all things that are within your power. When you take ownership of these elements, you'll notice a remarkable decrease in stress and an increase in overall satisfaction of your life, of yourself, of being able to look at yourself in the mirror and be like hell yeah, I got this. And that approach helps you become more intentional, deliberate and productive as you pursue whatever your goals might be. As you pursue whatever your goals might be, the science behind the power. Research shows that humans thrive when we feel competent, when we feel connected and in control of our environments. It doesn't matter the person. That's. Science, Focusing on what we can control feeds our need for autonomy, which in turn boosts intrinsic motivation. And by consciously applying controlling the controllables, we make choices aligned with our values, creating a self-sustaining cycle of motivation, resilience and growth.
Speaker 1:And there are steps to controlling the controllables right. You have to define your goals, write them down specific goals, such as improving fitness for a marathon or enhancing a child's learning, whatever it is. Define your goals, then identify controllables versus uncontrollables. Create whether it's a chart, whether it's kind of like a to-do list type of thing. Create a chart so that you can distinguish between elements you can control right your training, your effort, your environment and those that you can't weather others' opinions, whatever it might be and then focus on your actions.
Speaker 1:For each goal, you have to develop actionable strategies that direct your energy toward the controllables, and then you have to build consistency, repeat this process regularly to stay in control and proactive, moving forward with confidence. Right, I talk about care, consistent and repeated effort. That is what creates change, that is what keeps us aligned. Consistent and repeated effort, no matter what it is. That applies with everything, that applies to parenting, that applies to relationships, that applies to self-care all of that. Why does controlling the controllables change everything? When we waste energy on things that are beyond our influence, we often feel defeated and stressed and powerless, and focusing on uncontrollables pulls us in a reactive mindset, which diminishes our energy and shrinks our circle of influence our own personal influence over our life, our choices, our situation, all of it. You have to be proactive in your own growth and influence and create positive change by focusing on what you can impact. I talk about this too, which is controlling the controllables.
Speaker 1:By the way, there are two kinds of people that show up in the world, those that allow the world to impact them, right? Those that have either been diagnosed with something or, you know, they've been let go of a job, whatever it is right. It's all about how the world impacts them. They are the victim of everything that happens in their life, right? Not taking personal accountability or responsibility for anything. And then there's the individual that chooses, chooses Again, it's all choice to impact the world, no matter what is thrown at them. They control their controllables. And choosing to control your controllables, you give, or rather, it gives you the power to create, to achieve and to shape your life, even in challenging times. Even when the world is trying to impact you, it transforms adversity into opportunity and turns effort into progress, ultimately bringing a sense of peace and satisfaction that external circumstances cannot take away.
Speaker 1:You can control your work ethic, your effort, persistence and commitment. They are entirely within your control. And by dedicating yourself to excellence and refusing to settle for good enough, you I'm putting that like in quotes, in little air quotes, you can't see me. When you do that, you raise your standards and potential. Your work ethic becomes the bedrock of everything you achieve and it reflects your inner drive and dedication. This is like my mantra that I say to my son how you do anything is how you do everything. How you do anything is how you do everything. So you have your work ethic, seizing opportunities Every opportunity, no matter how small, is a chance to showcase your abilities and take a step towards your goals. By preparing meticulously and making the most of each opportunity, you open doors to even greater possibilities.
Speaker 1:Self-improvement Regardless of the obstacles, you can always work on becoming a better version of yourself. Whether it's honing your skills, improving your health or expanding your knowledge, self-improvement is entirely within your grasp. That is the endorphasm mindset. That is why I started the Endorphasmic podcast. It is why I opened the Red Room, why it's called endorphasm opened the red room, why it's called endorphasm?
Speaker 1:That self-improvement, that ability to connect with yourself, to get comfortably uncomfortable. It transcends not only all physical pursuits, but it transcends all pursuits, your attitude. Circumstances may be out of your control, but your attitude is not. By choosing to see setbacks as learning experiences and challenges as opportunities for growth, you remain resilient and focused. You remain resilient and focused. The last. I forget who said this, the last. I probably should have looked it up, but of course I didn't. Sometimes I just I talk and I don't always know what I'm going to say. The last of human freedoms is to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances. I'm going to look it up actually. Well, I'll look it up, I'll put it in my thing. So the last of human freedoms is to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances.
Speaker 1:Integrity no one can take away your integrity. It's yours alone. Living with honesty, treating others with respect and staying true to your values builds unshakable character In a world full of uncertainty. Integrity is your constant empowering you to act confidently and stay grounded. How you do anything is how you do everything. That is integrity. You have to be proud of what you do. If you half-ass one thing, chances are you're going to half-ass a lot of things.
Speaker 1:I tell people when they're working out, when they're doing yoga, whatever it is, your reaction to that environment, to the moment, is typically your reaction in life. You fall out of a pose, you get all upset. That is a reaction we typically have when anything doesn't go our way. Let it go. You fall out of a position or you can't get a move. You do a different one, or you get back into the pose, whatever it is.
Speaker 1:How you do anything is how you do everything, and that brings me to the freedom of letting go. By letting go of the uncontrollables and embracing what you can command, you set yourself free from unnecessary stress, frustration and self-doubt. When you direct your energy toward what you can impact, you create a positive feedback loop, transforming each day into a series of intentional, powerful actions. And this approach gives you the freedom to live proactively and to pursue your goals fearlessly and ultimately shape a life, I believe, of fulfillment and success. And listen, this doesn't mean that every day is fucking amazing. It doesn't mean that shit doesn't go wrong. It doesn't mean that some days you don't feel bad, but it allows you right. That's part of ownership of how you feel. Live your life with intention, control your controllables. I'm probably going to talk about this a million and one times more.
